St. Eustace

The painting collapses the first and last moments in St. Eustace's life as a Christian. While hunting he encountered a stag with a cross between its antlers, a vision which led him to convert to the Christian faith. Then, after a long series of disasters he came into the service of the Emperor Domitian, who had him killed when he refused to honor the gods.
At left, one of Eustace's hunting dogs barks at the stag. Above, an angel above brings him a garland to symbolize his martyrdom. To indicate his profession, he is dressed as a soldier and his helmet and sword lie on the ground.
